Mad Relief Worker, Day 1 at the Service Center

Jim Macdonald tells us how it should work.

Not to be confused with how it's working.7:45 am Arrive at designated service center location. Get told by fireman on security that it's been moved to civic center. Get told by someone in parking lot to go to chapter house.

8:15 am Arrive at chapter house (closer than civic center). Greeter at Building A says to go to Building B. After much debate, Bldg B says to go to Bldg A. Greeter sends notes into inner sanctum (3 or 4). No answer. Eventually am admitted to Bldg A. Eventually find out my function is having a meeting in Bldg B.

9:30 am Arrive at briefing.

9:35 am Meeting adjourned. Hang around in hall and wait for a new sc location tbd. Work on a resource list.

10:30 am Distribution forms and bank cards arrive. Cannot use bank cards because no banks are open on a holiday Saturday. Another worker and I are assigned to stamping a local address on the distribution forms.

11:30 am Take forms to new sc location. A meeting of interviewers has been going on for some time (with no notification to those of us working at the chapter house). 60 clients waiting outside for aid. Opening time: 1pm.

11:35 am Training meeting adjourned. Go to lunch. Waiter rants about lack of federal response. Car breaks down. Nice people help start car.

1 pm Center open for business. As I walk in, someone hands me a case. Closing time: 5 pm

7 pm Not closed yet, but I hand in the cases I've done and go home. No one knows where the center will be tomorrow.

Do you know how hard it is to get medicine for people whose doctor's offices, pharmacies, and hospitals are floating in pieces in the Gulf of Mexico?

Bright side: Kisses to Walgreens, who's going extra miles to ease the pain. Kisses to linking technology, which means I can call Louisiana information and say, "Get me a Rite Aid pharmacy that's not under water," and Shreveport can tell me pills, dosage, instructions, and doctors written up in New Orleans.

10:45 pm Stupidly writing diary.

10:50 pm  Asleep.
